SNP need to take university budget cuts more seriously - Macdonald

North East Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald has called on Education Secretary Angela Constance to look into the impact of higher education budget cuts on staffing at Aberdeen University and RGU.

Speaking after he asked a question on the issue in the Scottish Parliament today, Lewis Macdonald said:

“It is remarkable in the context of 100 redundancies at RGU and further job losses at Aberdeen University that the Cabinet Secretary for education has given no thought to the impact her government’s cuts will have on teaching at higher education institutions. It is as if she has simply washed her hands of the whole affair.

“Aberdeen’s two universities have been hit particularly hard by SNP budget cuts, and this will have an inevitable impact not just on teaching, but on research too.

“The Education Secretary must now look again at this issue, and carry out a much-needed impact assessment into the implications of budget cuts at RGU and Aberdeen University.”
