Macdonald calls for teacher support not punishment

North East Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald today called on the Scottish Government to stop punishing Aberdeen City Council for their difficulties in recruiting teachers, and to instead offer them the support they need.

Speaking today after asking a parliamentary question on the issue, Lewis Macdonald said:

“Only the SNP could see the problems experienced in recruiting teachers in the North East as an opportunity to cut the budgets of the councils involved.

“In any sensible world this would be an issue addressed by offering more support, but the Scottish Government is instead choosing to punish Aberdeen City Council – a measure that will only hurt the city’s children when further education services have to be cut to balance the books.

“This financial penalty is the equivalent of a child being given detention for not doing homework when they couldn’t afford pencil and paper. Nobody would think that was fair, and the situation facing Aberdeen City Council isn’t fair either.”
